The most hated card in the house. And if you had it, you sat on it.
This is a kitchen table, a stoop, a cousin's basement, a car ride, a family reunion that got loud. This is the card you dropped when you were two turns from losing and wanted to watch somebody's whole night fall apart. Somebody always accused somebody of stacking the deck. Somebody always flipped the pile.
I laid the fan out thick and painted the edges raised so the cards sit slightly off the canvas — because these things were physical. Bent corners, soft edges, that one card with a crease everyone could recognize from the back. Two tones of orange behind it, the palette of a game that never needed to be subtle.
Family didn't always talk. But family played UNO.
